Moving away from one’s culture pushes us to reassess our path and create a new environment that defines us. We can walk with the masses, or we can make
conscious choices and create a space we are comfortable in. In these explorations, Chandrika’s art is a revelation to herself. It expresses the effect the world
has on her. There is a simplification of form, juxtaposed with multiple layers of paint – scraping, reapplying, scribbling – a constant questioning of life.
A recurring theme is the loss of body parts, parallel to ruminations on what she has lost in her own journey. Is it her boundaries? Her culture? The people she left behind? In her work,
the result is a loss of stereotypes, and an obvious shift towards cultural ambivalence.
In the ‘Inversion’ group, one senses an exploration of positive and negative, as she tries to understand the people she sees around her. There is a striving for calm, as if all the chaos she sees needs to
be tamed. Or will it still be chaotic, no matter where she turns?
